Developed in 2000 by Sony and Scandisk,
memory stick is a memory used primarily in digital
cameras. Almost exclusively manufactured by Sony, the method of transmission
is standard. The standard dimensions are 50.0 mm (width) x 21.5 (Height) x 2.8
(thickness) mm.
Based on a flash memory series, the box included
the ram, and the controller.
There are several types of stick:
Standard version: transfer rate of 19.6 Mb / s maximum, 14.4 Mb / s in
general.
Pro Version: incompatible with previous version, with a higher speed
transfer, up to 160 Mb / s maxium: (15 Mb / s standard).
Magic Stick Duo: derived from the basic version but allows for greater
capacity always using 4 lines of communications. It detects only half
capacity when used with a standard controller. The Pro Duo version is based
on the Pro version.
The Magic Gates version differs only in data protection by encryption.
Version Pro-HG Duo HX release early September 2008 it uses an 8-bit bus
with a transfer rate of 20 MB / s read and 15 MB / s write, to compared with 30
MB / s when the SD 200X.
The current capacity reached 16
GB in Pro Duo versions.
Other types of memory used in portable devices are SD
and SDHC, CompactFlash
and XD-Picture.
